In January we explored common reactions during a Reiki session. From rumbling tummies to coughing and falling asleep on the couch, we can have a variety of responses to Reiki energy. Let’s discuss what can occur after the session…
Observing a client immediately after a Reiki session can be like watching someone emerge from light sedation. Movement and speech tends to be slower and clients usually appear somewhat dazed and confused as they try to make sense of what just happened. Some find it ‘amazing’, ‘bizarre’ or both but mostly, clients tell me how incredibly relaxed they feel.
Reiki first-timers rarely expect the sessions to be as powerful as they are. Many comment that the localised sensations within their bodies are completely unexpected and ‘strange’ but not at all unpleasant.
Physical transformation…
For those with physical ailments or where there has previously been pain, there are generally improved symptoms. Certainly, this was the case for me. I had been limping on a supported ankle sprain for many weeks. After one very powerful session with a Reiki student practitioner, I went home completely healed. It was something of a turning point. I realised how transformative Reiki is both emotionally and physically.
Sometimes, a healing crisis can occur. Symptoms feel temporarily worse, usually only for a short time before healing begins. This occurs because Reiki frees blocked energy and kickstarts a process of cleansing, detoxification and rejuvenation. This can be uncomfortable, even painful. But it also means that we are beginning to heal! So, work through the discomfort. It will pass.
You may feel very little during or after a treatment. That’s okay. A Reiki session isn’t intended to conclude with symphonic impact. Reiki is incredibly subtle and always goes where it is needed. It sometimes takes time for changes to occur, especially in chronic situations. Reiki is gentle. Sometimes, we experience improved health before realising it’s happened! For example, when we suddenly realise we are pain free after a period of discomfort.
Emotional transformation…
Reiki sessions can help us find a way forward when we struggle with emotional blocks or during times when we just feel stuck. Even the most subtle shift in energy can bring about a lightbulb moment when perception changes or previous problems become clear, allowing us to quickly find solutions that work.
In other cases, issues that have been suppressed may surface. These can include unhappy memories, unresolved traumas and other imbalances which require deep work, understanding, compassion and very often, forgiveness. Reiki lends support when we require courage and helps us work through challenges to recovery and emotional balance.
Get grounded!
After a Reiki session, some clients feel a little spaced-out. It’s usually quite easy to correct with a few simple grounding techniques. Marching on the spot, preferably in bare feet for up to 60 seconds can help. When lifting up each leg, touching each knee with the opposite hand can also help to balance both sides of the body. Get some fresh air. Drink as much water as you can to flush out toxins which Reiki helps to release. Avoid alcohol. Rest and enjoy some quiet time if possible. All of these help to make us feel more centred.
There are no Reiki Rules. We are all in an entirely different place. You’re not meant to feel one way or another during or after a Reiki session. But if you’re a Reiki newbie, I hope this short summary of potential, post-treatment outcomes will help you to decide whether you’d like to give Reiki a try.
I’ve experienced the benefits and that’s exactly why I became a practitioner. I’m stronger with Reiki. The challenges of modern life feel easier to navigate. With mental and emotional clarity comes the confidence to initiate change. And when we struggle with our physical health, Reiki facilitates gentle healing, easing us back to wellness.
