Reiki is most commonly described as a Japanese energy healing system. What does that actually mean and what happens during a Reiki treatment?
In truth, that’s a question that might take some time to answer in full. In short, Reiki is meditation. Regular Reiki practice makes everything beautifully simple, in my opinion. But for Reiki newbies, the idea of ‘energy healing’ may be confusing.
The key to understanding Reiki is to experience Reiki. If you feel a little apprehensive, listed below are some of the most common reactions to a Reiki session.
Colours & symbols
The most beautiful indication that energy is flowing is a rainbow of healing colours drifting gently inside the eyelids, a little like the soft blobs of colour in lava lamps or merging watercolour paints…
The colours can change for both client and practitioner, often when hand positions change on or near the body. Other visuals such as patterns, symbols or solid images can appear and may be significant for the client in the past, present or even the future.
Physical sensations
It’s common to feel heat, quite intensely, through the hands of your practitioner. Even if you have requested a hands-off treatment where the practitioner’s hands hover just above you, localised heat may still be felt in certain areas of your body. In contrast, others may feel a cool sensation in some areas. Tingling, pulsating sensations, numbness, a heaviness in the limbs or lightness of being are also normal reactions.
Physical & emotional release
One of the most common physical responses is a rumbling tummy! Throat-clearing, coughing or sneezing also occurs for some. Jerking movements and sudden twitches are quite regular reactions. Emotional tension is often released with tears. All of these reactions indicate that physical and emotional blockages are beginning to move and release.
Sleep
Falling asleep on the couch is a very normal response to Reiki and indicates deep relaxation which helps the body’s natural ability to heal. If you fall asleep, Reiki is doing its thing! And your practitioner will be thrilled so there’s really no cause for embarrassment. Some may experience a ‘drifting off’ sensation, a little like floating. Others report an ‘out of body’ experience, as if the spirit is hovering over the physical body.
Memories & the past
In a deeply, relaxed state, distant memories may also resurface and this can include loved ones and family members who have long-ago passed. It’s not uncommon to hear feedback from clients that loved ones or other spirit guides have been present during the session. In some cases silent conversations with the deceased occur between client and their visitor during the treatment.
Everyone’s experience will be slightly different but the outcome is almost always the same… a blissful state of calm.
